Reiki is said to have originated in Tibet thousands of years ago. Dr Mikao Usui rediscovered Reiki in the early 1900's and developed it late on into a healing system with the help of his successor Chijiro Hayashi. He studied for a Theology degree in Chicago, The Teachings of Buddha; learnt Chinese to understand Chinese sutras, and also learnt Sanskrit language to read Tibetan scrolls. It was a long journey...After the meditative fast that lasted 21 days on the mount Kuri Yama, Usui experienced 'satori', which can be translated as 'enlightenment'. Dr Micao Usui dedicated his life to Reiki and because of his enormous contribution to humanity, Reiki is still alive and available to learn. Nowadays, Reiki is taught by Reiki Master Teachers. The tradition is passed from Master to student, attuning them to the Reiki energy. The Reiki Council defines Reiki as 'Universal Life Force Energy', which describes the many systems of natural balancing. www.reikiregulation.org.uk The Japanese Kanji is made up of two parts: 'rei' meaning universal or spirit and 'ki', meaning energy or force.
